5 reasons why Digital Asset Management is broken
We believe that software that helps people maintain, access and distribute their marketing and branding files is broken. Both on a functional and on a business level. Let me explain.
Every company continually creates marketing and branding files. Logos, product photos, Powerpoint and Word templates, television ads, flash banners and Youtube videos are created at an ever-growing pace as a company grows. And as the amount of data grows it becomes harder to maintain.
This is where digital asset management (DAM) comes in. Instead of keeping your files in a bunch of folders, be it on an FTP server, Dropbox, a shared network drive or (hopefully not) on the marketing director’s computer – the right DAM system can make it as easy to find a file you need for your marketing as it is to find a book on Amazon.com.
End of story, right? It’s not that simple: The DAM software market is broken. Here are five reasons why:
1. “Fill out this form to request a demo”
I don’t want to fill out a form. I want to try your DAM solution now. Why can I try ten different CRM (customer relationship management) solutions in 30 minutes but I can hardly find a single DAM vendor that lets me sign up for a trial without having to talk to a sales person?
2. Try before you buy
Why do so few vendors allow clients to try out their product for free? The 30-day free trial is a staple for most other software-as-a-service industries but it hasn’t gained ground with DAM vendors.
3. Staying up to date
Many DAM vendors will still install their software on your servers, instead of hosting it themselves. The only way to keep the software up to date is to invest in having someone upgrade it – otherwise you fall behind.
4. Setup-fees
Most DAM vendors charge up to hundreds of thousands of dollars to customise every nook and cranny of your installation of their software. This increases your risk of purchase: If anything goes wrong you either have to stick with a broken system or explain to your boss or shareholders that you went down the wrong path.
5. Don’t make me think!
And why do DAM vendors charge you through the teeth in consulting and setup-fees when you buy their product in the first place? Because their product is so complicated your staff needs training to use it. Don’t make me think! It takes me five seconds to find one book in a million on Amazon – why should it take any longer for a beginner to start using a DAM system?
